What’s in a dedication?

First of all I want to apologize to the blog reading public. I have been an awful blogger.  I’m sure it’s not a good enough excuse that I was diligently working on edits for Midnight Mirage. I’m happy to report Midnight Mirage will be released on June 8th. Only a week and a half from now. I’m getting really excited. But regardless of my reasons, I’m going to try and do better on staying in touch.

It seems funny that the first blog I write in a while is about dedications. But not talking about that kind of dedication. I’m talking about book dedications.

I’ll start by saying I love dedications. I always read them. I’m always curious what they say about the writer. I love to see who strongly influenced their work, what their life’s like (do they had children, spouses, or pets). I can still remember a few funny ones I’ve read. My favorite was by Juniper Bell, for her work Training the Receptionist. She dedicated the work to anyone who’s ever fantasized the hours away at an office job.  (I’m definitely in that group :D)

For Midnight, I had a lot of trouble deciding who to dedicate it to. There was no person in my life that really affected this novel. Unlike other works, none of the characters in this novel reflect anyone I love (though I don’t know if I’d tell any of them if it did, after all it’s a ménage, haha).

So I polled a few friends to see how they have dedicated their novels to. Many had dedicated their works spouses, children, critique partners and editors. Some dedicated their work to pets, which I might contemplate doing. I do love my furballs. Others dedicated their work to members of the family or love ones they had lost, as a tribute.

But what made the decision for me of who to dedicate my novel to was an incident that happened on Mother’s Day. I gave my mother a printed out, bound copy of Naughty List for the holiday. When I read her the dedication from my first novel, she started to break into tears. She admitted that Mother’s Day always reminded her of her mother. My grandmother was a huge supporter of my writing. Some of my fondest memories are of her, writing in her living room, pounding on her old typewriter, reading with her at night. Unfortunately we lost her to Colon Cancer almost twenty years ago. I think she would be truly excited to see that I actually made my writing dreams come true.

So I decided to dedicate Midnight Mirage to my grandmother. Here’s a sneak peak of the dedication.

To all the strong, powerful women that have encouraged me to follow my dreams.

Especially the real PFM, my grandmother. Who encouraged me to write from the first day I started to bang on her typewriter. I wish you could be here to see me finally achieve my dream.

Here’s yet another dedication that will make my mother cry.
