Q: What was your inspiration for this story?
A: This story was originally inspired by an episode of Private Practice where one the doctors created an arm prosthetic for one of his patients who lost his arm in Iraq. He was determined to get this high tech arm so he could dip his wife during their wedding dance. It’s something they had planned on doing in the many letters that they exchanged while he was away. He was so sweet and romantic he immediately got my romance writing brain working. It also flipped back to an episode of Grey’s Anatomy (Private Practice's parent show) where one of the characters described not leaving their boyfriend who was suffering for PTSD from the Iraqi war, saying, “you wouldn’t ask me to leave him if he’d lost his leg, would you?” And the characters of Evan and Jessie sprung to life, conflict, blind determination and sweet ending all in one.
Q: What did Michael do during the War?
A: Michael isn’t really a soldier, though he is part of the reserves, he was actually there for his computer capabilities. That’s why his injury is so traumatic, in his head he never really believed it could happen to him because he wasn’t on the front lines. But as we all know, casualties of war are not just the soldiers in the foxholes.
He spent most of his time in Iraq fixing computer equipment and helping soldiers send video home. But he did still had to go through boot camp and eat a soldier’s diet for a year and a half, giving him that toned soldier body.
